THREE COUNTRIES
IN THREE DAYS!
HONDURAS, GUATEMALA & EL SALVADOR
In
3 nights / 4 days, we will visit an interesting route where we
can appreciate the diversity of ethnic groups such as the Maya,
Chortis, Lenca, and Pipil.
The beginning of our program is in either from La Ceiba or San
Pedro Sula as departure point.
Taking a scenic road the places we visit are Copan Ruinas, where
we overnight the first night, and visit the Archaeological Park.
In the Mayan World Copan is considered as the "Paris"
due to its art, beauty and refinement of the stelas. Also the
city of Copan Ruinas has the hospitality of their people set in
the stoned paved streets and the arquitecture of Colonial times.
Next we travel towards Guatemala, where
we first reach the city of Chiquimula.
Then we continue on to Esquipulas, where we overnight the second
night, here we visit the Basilica of the Black Christ, which
is the sanctuary of the venerated Black Christ.
Millions of people both national and foreign, all who come to
visit in a pilgrimage.
The Basilica is approximately 400 years old.
At 1 k.m. Esquipulas are the caves, known as " Las Cuevas
de Las Minas" that give an interesting contrast to the
Catholic faith's landmark of the Basilica, here important rituals
of the Mayans took place , also there is a Zoo that hosts 70animals,
next to it the Milagros River flows.
Some claim the Black Christ was found within these caves.
The third day we enter Honduras by the
Department of Ocotepeque and visit the city of Nueva Ocotepeque
here we may visit the Soldier ´s Monument that pays homage
to those who died in the last battle in the war between Honduras
and El Salvador, later we visit the city of Old Ocotepeque that
was wiped of by an avalanche by the Marchala River in 1942.
It is optional to visit the Catholic Church that was constructed
in Colonial times by the Spaniards being this the only building
left standing after such natural
catastrophe.
We continue on to the frontier between
Honduras and El Salvador, until we reach the town of San Ignacio,
EL Salvador here we see the craftsmanship of local artisans
making souvenirs and go up the Miramundo Biological Reserve
that is 2420 meters above sea level, where temperatures may
reach 3 degrees Centigrade ( important to carry a warm coat).
This place virtually makes us walk on the clouds, rain can be
seen horizontally.
Ending our circuit we return to Honduras.
It is optional to combine this program
with the Lenca trail visiting Santa Rosa and Gracias, Lempira
as an extension.
