| About La Moskitia |
|
Adventures in La Moskitia 5 days/4 nights Come and experience culture bonding with unique ethnic groups in the breathtaking jungle. Located within the Department of Gracias a Dios, this region is to the east of Trujillo, and towards the Nicaraguan border. Its name comes from their native inhabitants the Miskito. This ethnic group maintains their language and customs. Since this region is sparsely populated and quite difficult to access and home to the largest tract of virgin tropical rainforest in the North American hemisphere, it is protected under Honduran Law for most of its expanse. This destination is for those tourists who enjoy rugged adventure, because it lacks infrastructure and modern day comfort. Here we have 5 protected areas; The Rio Platano Biosphere Reserve, the Tawahka Anthropological Reserve, the Patuca National Park, the Cruta Caratasca Wildlife Refuge and the RusRus Biological Reserve. It is very important to point out that the Rio Platano Biosphere Reserve is Honduras largest protected area and a World Heritage Site declared by UNESCO. Tour of La Mosquitia 5 days / 4 nights Day 1: we travel from La Ceiba – Brus Laguna –Kuri Leaving at first morning light from hotel of your choice in La Ceiba to the airport, to board a flight towards Brus Laguna. Upon our arrival, we take our transfer by land up to Brus Lagoon to a “Tuc Tuc" (what the miskitos call a canoe with a motor engine), this mode of transport will carry us across the lagoon until we reach Kuri where we may rest perhaps even take a nap, on our journey we shall enjoy the scenary and birds that accompany us along our way. Once we get Kuri we rest a while until the afternoon, when we ride a 4 x 4 vehicle that transits over the strip of land that divides the Ebans Lagoon from the Atlantic Ocean, passing through various communities such as: Playita, Kuri, Belen, Raista and others, here at these places it is possible to be able to have a cold beverage, later we head back towards Kuri to dine. It is an optional activity to go crocodile watching during a nocturnal visit at the aquatic canals. Day 2: This morning we board the "Tuc Tuc" that will take us upriver into the Rio Platano taking a few stops to enjoy the scenery and birds and others surprises that we'll find on our way until we reach Las Marias( a community composed of Pech + Miskito Indians )here we lodge this night. At this part of our trip we hike our way through the lush jungle guided expertly by Miskito and Pech guides. In the afternoon we will go around Las Marias community and continue to interact with the Miskito and Pech people. This is where we see how they live and their cultures, basking in their hospitality, listening to the myths and mysterious legends, as well as their unique beliefs, we dine and rest. Day 3: We rise very early this morning and take a short hike upriver and then we board a "Pipante" (Indigenous Canoe looks like an open bark split in half) that carry us to the Petroglyphs (Primitive Carvings on the rocks) , our Pipante is rafted expertly throughout the rapids within the Rio Platano of our Miskito and Pech crew , as we travel deeper into the jungle , to take a break before we continue on our way by hiking the virgin jungle to then meet up with our "Pipante" to take a cold lunch while our crew rests . We move on to take photos and closely see the petroglyphs, going downriver toward "Las Marias" to dine and rest. Day4: We exit Las Marias after our breakfast, we say farewell to these hospitable people that have a very important impact in our journey making this experience unforgettable. Meanwhile we board a "Tuc Tuc" once more bringing us downriver towards Kuri where we shall spend our last Nights, enjoying a cold beer and the afternoon off.
