About Roatan

Welcome to Roatan!

The capital of the Bay Islands, the insular Department of Honduras. Roatan is the largest island of this department, also the most developed with infrastructure and real estate, located 50 kms. off the mainland of Honduras. .

Honduras is known for being a mountainous country and the insular territory is no exception, Roatan has a mountain chain that covers the length of the island like a spinal column of its extension, they give us wonderful scenic views of the island.

Proudly the Bay Islands are part of the second largest coral reef barrier in the world.

Roatan has many communities that have hotels and different attractions as we now the Bay Islands are known worldwide for diving and white sandy beaches. It is a place of historical importance as well because during Colonial times the department of the Bay Islands was under British Rule and until 1872, were returned to Honduras. The British left their mark; the natives are English speakers after they took them from the Spanish Crown’s Honduran Province in 1642. Also Roatan is the largest island of the insular chain: (Roatan, Utila, Guanaja, Barbareta, Morat, St. Elena and Cayos Cochinos).

Last but not least Roatan´s Punta Gorda is the first Garifuna Community in Honduras; here is where their ship wrecked when they were expelled from the island of Saint Vincent 213 years ago to spread out in the mainland´s Northern Coast.
