La Moskitia

LA MOSKITIA (THE HONDURAN MOSQUITO COAST)
La Moskitia is an area that extends itself from Honduras into Nicaragua.
Located within the Department of Gracias a Dios, this region is to the east of Trujillo, and towards the Nicaraguan border. Its name comes from their native inhabitants the Miskito. This ethnic group maintains their language and customs.

Since this region is sparsely populated and quite difficult to access and home to the largest tract of virgin tropical rainforest in the North American hemisphere, it is protected under Honduran Law for most of its expanse. This destination is for those tourists who enjoy rugged adventure, because it lacks infrastructure and modern day comfort.

Here we have 5 protected areas; The Rio Platano Biosphere Reserve, the Tawahka Anthropological Reserve, the Patuca National Park, the Cruta Caratasca Wildlife Refuge and the RusRus Biological Reserve.

It is very important to point out that the Rio Platano Biosphere Reserve is Honduras largest protected area and a World Heritage Site declared by UNESCO.
